Creating a Taxonomy Automatically from a Collection

The following procedure uses the Taxonomy Wizard to automatically create a taxonomy from a collection.

1. From the Summary screen, click Create in the Taxonomy pane. The Taxonomy Wizard displays.

2. Click Automatically create a Taxonomy from a collection.

3. Select Automatically publish all categories in the new taxonomy to publish the categories during the creation process. Publishing all the categories eliminates the need to publish each category individually after creation.

4. Click Next.



5. Enter a name for the taxonomy. Click Next.



6. Choose the collection to use to create the taxonomy. Click Next.



7. Choose the method for the automatic creation. Methods you can choose from are:

Based on a specific field value.

If you choose to use a field value, the Choose Field dialog box displays. Select the field to use.

You can also enter a string for the Field Delimiter or Hierarchy Delimiter. The entire string is used as a separator for field or hierarchy when Business Console parses the metafield.

Click Next.



Based on the document file path or URL.

To eliminate extra path levels that would add to your taxonomy, type the path components you want ignored during the taxonomy creation. For example, if you use the verity_doccoll collection, type ../docs/ in the Ignore Prefix text box to create a taxonomy that displays the faq, html, and other directories directly below Root. Otherwise, Business Console creates a taxonomy that contains .. as the first level below Root.

Click Next.

 

   
  Note   You can click Finish at any time. Business Console uses defaults for the rest of the values.
   

 



8. Choose from optional automatic creation options. You can

Export a parametric index—Exports a parametric index that contains all the automatically generated categories and matching documents. The resulting parametric index is saved in the pis directory within the K2 data directory.

Create topics from documents in each generated category—Creates topics for each automatically generated category from the documents specified through the field, path, or URL.

If you use this option, the automatic taxonomy creation might take a longer time to finish if a large number of categories are being created. You must also be aware of the topic set limits. For information about the limits, see the appendix about query limits in the Verity Query Language and Topic Guide. If you do see problems with the topic creation, use the Export Parametric Index option to retrieve the document list from outside the Business Console application.

Click Next.



9. Choose the collections to associate to the taxonomy. Click Next.



10. Create a new parametric index or choose from existing Business Console parametric indexes for any associated collection. Select Automatically update on category publish to ensure that the parametric index is updated with the new taxonomy. Click Next.

 

   
  Note   If you select this option, when you publish an updated taxonomy the parametric index associated with that taxonomy is also updated. Other parametric indexes require manual updates through the Parametric Index module.
   

 

11. Review the taxonomy selections. Click Create Taxonomy to create the new taxonomy. The taxonomy creation runs in the wizard.

12. When the taxonomy has been created, click Open New Taxonomy to open the taxonomy or Exit to leave the taxonomy wizard.
